Trump threatens Iran with 'ultimate alternative' if signing of memorandum is disrupted

US President Donald Trump on the Truth Social social network announced the signing of a memorandum with Iran on Sunday, June 14, which is designed to stop the military conflict between the countries and will require the start of negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program. The head of the White House also released a statement from Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, who said that the document would be signed in electronic format.

Over the past month, Trump has been talking about an approaching deal with Iran, against which he launched the military Operation Epic Fury in February of this year. There has been a truce between the parties since April, but the United States maintains a military blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, an important trade artery that Iran has also been trying to block since the conflict began.

The US President said in a post on Saturday, June 13, that the Strait of Hormuz “will be open to everyone” after signing the memorandum on Sunday. By the way, Trump will celebrate his 80th birthday on June 14, but he did not mention this in the message.

“When the time is right, when there is calm, we will come and take away the nuclear dust buried deep under the mighty granite rocks thanks to our wonderful B-2 bombers and their magnificent pilots. I hope this process will be quick, easy and smooth. If that doesn't happen, then we have a definitive alternative that I hope never has to be used again!” – Trump said.

He did not specify what “alternative” he had in mind, but he had previously threatened Iran with the “death of civilization,” which managed to raise fears in the world about the use of nuclear weapons by the US administration. Trump subsequently emphasized in response to questions from reporters that he was not considering this option.

In Iran, shortly before Trump’s publication and against the backdrop of a statement by Sharif, who was acting as a mediator in the negotiations, they said that the memorandum would not be signed in the next 24 hours. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai stressed that the country does not yet have plans to send a delegation to Switzerland, where, according to rumors, the document could be signed in person.

According to CNN, the idea of a “remote” signing, which Sharif announced, was actually discussed by American and Iranian negotiators. The “digital” format was also mentioned on Friday by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi. According to him, as quoted by the Tasnim agency, Iran, following the signing of a 14-point memorandum, including the unfreezing of assets, will become “the winner in this war.”
