The director of the film “Spider-Man: A New Day” that broke a number of box office records, Destin Daniel Cretton, will devote the near future to working on a film adaptation of the Japanese manga about the character Naruto Uzumaki. Work on Spider-Man 5 will begin only after the completion of this project, reports The Hollywood Reporter (THR).
Earlier it became known that due to the success of Spider-Man: New Day, producers Sony Pictures plan to retain Cretton as director of the next part. The intention was confirmed to Deadline by the head of the franchise, Amy Pascal, who added that there are no script developments for Spider-Man 5 yet.
Cretton will begin work on the Naruto film in the first half of 2027, THR notes. The Hawaii-born, 47-year-old director with Japanese roots noted in a comment to Inverse that he plans to make the film “very close” to the manga and anime, and called the preparation for filming “very intriguing.” The agreement on Cretton's participation in the Lionsgate project was reached before the start of his work on Spider-Man: New Day.
“Don't expect a new Spidey movie to come out anytime soon,” THR insiders noted of Cretton's plans.
Spider-Man: New Day, the fourth film in the franchise starring Tom Holland, set a number of box office records in the US and worldwide in August. In particular, the film now has the highest grossing opening weekend in the US ($360 million), the fastest gross of $500 million in the US (on the 7th day), and the second fastest gross of $1 billion in the world (over the same period).
The film adaptation of Naruto's adventures previously went through the so-called production hell – the film could not reach the filming stage for 10 years and changed several directors. Manga creator Masashi Kishimoto supported the producers' choice of Cretton.
