British singer Bonnie Tyler has died at the age of 75, her official website reported. The relatives did not give a specific cause of death, noting that the artist died in the hospital as a result of an illness for which she was treated in Portugal. Local media reported about acute appendicitis in the performer.

As the BBC notes, in May, Tyler was placed in a medically induced coma due to emergency intestinal surgery, which she underwent in Portugal. In June, she was brought out of a coma, but the singer’s condition remained “very bad,” her representatives noted.

The cause of Tyler's health problems was acute appendicitis, which led to a ruptured appendix, according to the Portuguese media outlet Portugal Resident. The problem is usually caused by a purulent infection in the abdomen called peritonitis. According to the publication, doctors' recent attempts to stabilize Tyler's condition without using a ventilator were unsuccessful.

The singer spent her final months in hospital in the southern Portuguese city of Faro, where she also had a home, and turned 75 on June 8 during her treatment. The performer was not left by her husband Robert Sullivan, with whom she had been married for more than 50 years. The couple had no children.

Tyler (née Gaynor Hopkins) is known for her signature husky tone for the hits Total Eclipse of the Heart, It's a Heartache and Holding Out for a Hero. The last song was heard in the cartoon “Shrek 2” and is often called by the first words of the chorus “I Need a Hero”.

In 2013, the Welsh native represented the UK at the Eurovision television competition with the song Believe in Me. Despite her cult status, Tyler was unable to overcome the trend of underwhelming British performances in the competition and finished 19th in the final.
