He has already been elected twice to the post of head of the International Olympic Committee. The first term began in 2013. The second lasts from 2021 and ends in 2025.
IOC President Thomas Bach has decided not to run for re-election. He himself told journalists about this, TASS writes.
In his speech, Bach said that after 12 years as head of the committee, a change in leadership would be best suited. In addition, he added that he himself was the initiator of term limits.
However, some members of the committee considered the possibility of rewriting the Olympic Charter so that Bach would have a chance to be re-elected.
Why Bach made this decision
Thomas Bach came to this conclusion after much thought and discussions with his family. Bach named his age as one of the reasons for this decision.
“In order to effectively implement all the new projects, to cope with the technological tsunami of the convergence of sciences such as artificial intelligence, biochemistry and neuroscience, you need to immerse yourself in this digital world. … For this new way of life, I am not the best captain, given my age”, – he told the committee members.
Thomas Bach is 70 years old. His current term ends in March 2025.
