New York and neighboring states were hit by downpours of up to 2 inches (5 cm) per hour on Thursday, August 27, NBC New York reported. Localized flooding has already been reported from Monmouth and Middlesex counties in New Jersey, as well as southern Long Island.
In these areas, due to flooding, rail connections to New York had to be temporarily closed, and problems with road travel were also reported. Wind gusts of up to 60 mph (about 27 m/s) and coin-sized hail are forecast for Monmouth County, the channel adds.

There are currently 25 million people at risk of flooding. A National Weather Service (NWS) warning will remain in effect throughout New York City until 7 p.m.
In total, at least 38 million people in the northeastern United States were in the zone of thunderstorms, which could develop into a so-called supercell by the evening, Fox Weather notes. Meteorologists call thunderclouds with a mesocyclone, an upward rotating air flow, supercells. Such thunderstorms are often accompanied by tornadoes.
A tornado warning was issued by the NWS for the cities of New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore, where such events are typically rare. As Fox Weather notes, the warning was the seventh this year for New York, while only one was issued last year. In Nassau County, New York, the first EF-1 tornado of 2021 was recorded earlier in August.
The second level of general weather danger out of five was declared on Thursday, in addition to the cities mentioned, in the American capital Washington.
