19 million dangerous eggs – the maximum risk of salmonellosis has been announced in the USA. What does it lead to?

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of nearly 1.6 million packages of eggs due to the risk of salmonella contamination. As The Hill notes, in total we are talking about 19 million dangerous eggs, and the authorities recently raised the risk category for their consumption to the maximum first level.

The white and brown shell eggs were produced by Midwest Poultry Services LP on farms in Texas from June 6 to July 3, 2026, according to the FDA. The batches, which were sold by the dozen, expired between July 20 and August 17. The products were supplied to Brookshire grocery stores in Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico, Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana. In the last two states, shipments also reached Kroger stores and small retail outlets.

According to epidemiological information collected by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of salmonella infections during the sale and recall of eggs reached almost 100 cases in 17 states. 26 people required hospitalization, but no deaths have been reported so far.

The egg recall on Wednesday was classified as a Class I hazard to consumer health and life.

“Class I is a situation in which there is a reasonable likelihood that use of or exposure to a hazardous product will result in serious adverse health effects or death,” the FDA emphasizes.

The department emphasized that most people infected with salmonella (Salmonella Enteritidis) experience diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. Those most at risk are children under 5 years of age, adults over 65 years of age and people with weakened immune systems, as they may develop more severe complications such as sepsis and internal bleeding.

Experts urged people not to eat the recalled eggs in any form, return them to the store or throw them away. Consumers are also urged to wash objects and surfaces that may have come into contact with the products with hot soapy water.

“Contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following symptoms: diarrhea and a fever above 102°F (39°C), diarrhea that lasts more than two days, bloody diarrhea, severe vomiting that prevents you from drinking, signs of dehydration including little urination, dry mouth and throat, dizziness when standing up,” the CDC added.

Earlier in the United States, the first deaths were recorded as a result of an outbreak of cyclosporiasis, which causes “explosive” diarrhea, which RTVI previously reported. The spread of the disease was linked to contaminated iceberg lettuce supplied to Taco Bell.
