Canada will take part in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027, state broadcaster CBC/Radio-Canada announced. The decision was made after a vote at the General Assembly of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) in the Czech Republic, as a result of which the country received the status of a full member of the EBU.

Preparations for Canada’s entry into the EMU, which coordinates the competition, began in 2025. Last November, Mark Carney's government allocated C$150 million to the national broadcaster to “explore the possibility of participating in Eurovision,” Politico writes.

CBC/Radio-Canada President and CEO Marie-Philippe Bouchard said the music competition will “showcase Canadian talent on one of the world's most iconic stages.”

“Our participation in the Eurovision Song Contest, starting next year, will showcase Canadian talent on one of the world's most storied music stages. Pageant fans in Canada will be able to continue watching the show and voting for contestants, as they have done for years. At the same time, they will have the exciting opportunity to watch their own country perform on the Eurovision stage,” said Bouchard.

As CBC/Radio-Canada notes, Canadian citizens are enthusiastic and interested in the competition. During this year's Eurovision Song Contest, Canada placed in the top three votes in the Rest of the World category. Canadians have also become some of the most active ticket buyers outside of Europe, with many traveling to Vienna specifically to attend the competition's semi-finals and grand final in May.

Canadian performers have appeared on the Eurovision stage more than once under the flag of other countries. The most famous example is Celine Dion, a native of Quebec, who in 1988 brought Switzerland its second victory in the history of the competition with the song Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi.

Lara Fabian, who later received Canadian citizenship, also entered the top five that year. Even earlier, in 1986, Cherisse Lawrence performed at Eurovision with the composition L'Amour de ma vie – she took third place.

Canada will become the first new Eurovision country since Australia joined the competition in 2015.

At Eurovision 2027, which will take place in Bulgaria, the Canadian representative will begin the fight for victory from the semi-finals. CBC/Radio-Canada plans to announce details of the selection process later this year.
