The NHL club Minnesota Wild is considering trading Russian forward Yakov Trenin as part of a roster overhaul before the free agent market opens, The Athletic reports.
According to the publication, the club's management is looking for ways to strengthen the attack line and free up space under the salary cap. One of the players Minnesota is ready to part with is 29-year-old Trenin.
The Russian earns $3.5 million per season, and his contract with the club runs for another two years. As The Athletic notes, trading Trenin could help the Wild free up funds for other deals, including the possible acquisition of Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin.
Minnesota general manager Bill Guerin previously said that the team continues to work to strengthen its roster after being eliminated in the second round of the Stanley Cup.
Trenin joined the Wild before last season. He is considered a power forward, useful in defense and in the minority, but is not one of the team's most productive players.
In addition to Trenin, other possible trade candidates include Ryan Hartman, Jonas Brodin and team captain Jared Spurgeon.
