Steven Spielberg's new thriller was liked by critics – what is “Revelation Day” about and why did it spark conspiracy theories?

Steven Spielberg's new film, Disclosure Day, released in the United States on June 12, was liked by a number of critics who had the opportunity to watch it in advance. Gizmodo's Jermaine Lucier called the UFO thriller the director's best film in 20 years, and Collider's Stephen Whiteraub recommended that you “stop watching the trailers” to fully enjoy the story.

The main twists of the story are kept secret ahead of the premiere, but it is known that Oscar nominee Emily Blunt played the main role of a weather forecaster in the film.

Blunt's character, along with cybersecurity specialist Josh O'Connor, known for the film “The Contenders”, decides to uncover stolen state secrets about the existence of alien life. The main antagonist of the film was played by Colin Firth, and another supporter of the whistleblowers was Colman Domingo, who recently played the role of Michael Jackson's father in the film “Michael”.

As critics noted in the first reviews on social networks, the film with a budget of more than $100 million turned out to be exciting, and Blunt has a chance to once again compete for an Oscar, although it is traditionally not given for films in the adventure and fantasy genres.

“A dense roller coaster movie that combines chase, romance and mystery. Spielberg’s best film in 20 years, filled with all the magic that makes his films special,” Lucier said in a brief review on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

Amid interest in the film, the script for which was written by David Koepp, who worked with Spielberg on Jurassic Park, conspiracy theories have appeared online that it is actually a secret sequel to another science-fiction film by the director, 1977’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

As MovieWeb notes, one of the reasons was the similar appearance of the aliens that first appeared in the final trailer for Revelation Day, which was released on Thursday.

Spielberg himself noted, presenting this trailer, that in the 50 years that have passed since Close Encounters of the Third Kind, he has become “more inclined” towards the version of the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations.

“I’m much more inclined now than I was when I made Close Encounters to believe that we are not the only intelligent civilization in this universe,” Spielberg said.

In addition to the theory of a hidden sequel, some UFO-themed users have also begun to promote the idea that the film will actually reveal secrets about aliens kept by the US government, Digital Spy adds.

By the way, earlier in May, the Pentagon, on behalf of US President Donald Trump, began to declassify some documents about UFOs, and the site with them was visited by more than 1 billion readers. The Internet then managed to joke that Spielberg should have been happy with such “advertising.”
