US President Donald Trump said on the Truth Social social network that his administration managed to reach an agreement with Iran to cease hostilities, in connection with which the American military blockade of the Strait of Hormuz will be immediately lifted. The Iranian news agency Fars, in turn, announced a statement from the authorities regarding the agreement with the United States in the near future.
In recent weeks, Trump has repeatedly announced an imminent agreement with Iran, against which he launched the military Operation Epic Fury last February. In recent days, Trump has argued that the new agreement will be a “wall” in Iran's path to nuclear weapons.
“The deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to everyone! In this regard, I instruct to ensure free passage through the Strait of Hormuz and the immediate lifting of the military blockade by the United States. Vessels of the world, start your engines. Let the oil flow!” – Trump wrote on his social network on June 14.
Details of the agreement have not yet been published, but Fars reported that Trump “made concessions” as Israel resumed hostilities in Lebanon. Earlier on Sunday, Trump harshly criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in comments to reporters for the strikes amid the negotiations.
As Fars emphasizes, Iran was given guarantees of “preserving the territorial integrity of Lebanon”, lifting the blockade, and it was also agreed that Iran, together with Oman, would regulate the legal basis for shipping off its shores. State media in Iran have generally portrayed the situation as “forcing the enemy” to cease hostilities.
Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif, who previously acted as a mediator in negotiations between the United States and Iran, said that the signing of a document between the parties to the conflict could take place on Friday, June 19, in Switzerland. He described the agreement, previously called a memorandum, as a “peace deal.”
