RTVI presenter Lisa Kaimin already lived in New York during the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 and remembers that day well. In a special broadcast dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the tragedy, Lisa spoke about her feelings.
“I moved to New York in February 2001, six months before the terrorist attacks. And I, of course, remember this day very well. I lived in Manhattan and watched it live. That is, I lived quite far away, I didn’t live there, but still the smell of burning, for example, was felt even there. And I watched live as these towers collapsed. It was impossible to believe that this was not some kind of special effect, that this was not some kind of film,” the RTVI presenter shared, noting that she could not compare her emotions with the feelings of people who lost loved ones during the terrorist attacks.
She said that after September 11, many residents left Manhattan because they were afraid that terrorist attacks could happen again. The atmosphere was oppressive, people did not know what would happen next. In the evenings everything was closed, even 24-hour pharmacies. There were no cars – Manhattan was blocked off, you couldn’t drive into it, you could only leave.
It should be noted that on the day of the terrorist attack, the RTVI team – at that time NTV International – worked at the epicenter of the events and went live. The footage taken by the film crew was used by television channels around the world. The journalists who covered the attack received a collective Emmy Award. Among them was the RTVI team.
