The United States has reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland and will significantly increase its military presence on the territory of the world's largest island, said the head of the White House, Donald Trump. According to him, Washington will receive full control over security in this region.
He noted that this would solve “all of our many problems,” and the agreement itself does not provide for any payment from the United States. According to him, the agreement is open-ended and the United States will immediately begin deploying a “significant military presence” in Greenland.
Trump noted that “from now on, no enemy of the United States” will be able to have a base in Greenland, have a military presence there, or make strategic investments there without written approval from Washington.
He added that the United States will take good care of the territory of Greenland.
“For over 100 years, presidents have recognized the strategic importance of Greenland, but none of them have been able to do anything about it. I am proud that it was I who became the president who finally and irrevocably solved this extremely important problem. This is a dream come true for the United States of America, very important, historical and special,” the US President wrote on the Truth Social social network.
In Denmark and Greenland at the time of writing this information was not confirmed.
Washington did consider purchasing Greenland in 1867 and 1946, but Copenhagen rejected both proposals. The island was a colony of Denmark until 1953 and remains part of it, but received autonomy in 1979, and expanded autonomy in 2009.
The American Pituffik Air Base is located in Greenland. It is of strategic importance to the US military and its ballistic missile early warning system. Since returning to the White House in 2025, Trump has repeatedly said that Greenland should come under Washington's control, citing possible threats from Russia and China. On the island itself, as well as in Denmark, such talk was sharply rejected.
