At least five people were killed and five others were injured at Miami International Airport on Sunday, CBS News reported. A Boeing 767-300 cargo plane skidded off the runway and rammed several cars.
The exact reason has not been established at this time. The Miami airport has no emergency braking systems, the Associated Press (AP) reported. At the same time, it is a very busy airport – in 2025 its passenger traffic amounted to more than 55 million people.
The Amazon Prime Air plane, which was flying from San Juan, Puerto Rico, was operated by cargo airline 21 Air. It will provide assistance to the victims, said its CEO Keith Winters.
The identities of the dead and injured are not disclosed. Several people had to be extricated from damaged cars, and another was trapped under a car. Both pilots were also trapped in the cockpit.
Three of the victims were reported to be hospitalized in critical condition.
About 200 emergency services personnel were sent to the scene. When they arrived, the plane was on fire and thick smoke was pouring out of it. There are also reports of a fuel leak from the aircraft.
The arrival and departure of aircraft was stopped for three hours. By Sunday evening, more than 160 flights had been canceled and about 325 delayed, according to the website FlightAware. Several planes were diverted to Orlando International Airport, which is located more than 320 kilometers (nearly 200 miles) north of Miami. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned those traveling to Miami of the potential for significant flight delays and cancellations.
