US President Donald Trump said that resolving the conflict in Ukraine is “much closer” than one might imagine. According to him, both the Russian and Ukrainian sides are interested in reaching a peace agreement.
Trump made the corresponding statement while talking to reporters in the Oval Office at the launch ceremony of the “Trump Accounts” investment program for children. Answering questions from the press, the president positively assessed the current negotiation efforts with the participation of the United States and noted that the leaders of Russia and Ukraine are striving to end the conflict.
“I think he [Путин] feels pressure. He wants to complete it, and Ukraine wants to complete it. We are negotiating and we will see if we can put an end to this,” Trump said.
Trump called the ongoing fighting and military deaths “terrible.” According to him, the parties are getting closer to ending the conflict.
“It's horrible. I've completed eight wars and this had to be one of the easiest, in my opinion. I think that [урегулирование] much closer than we can imagine,” the US President said.
Trump added that the issue of the Ukrainian settlement will be one of the topics of discussion with NATO allies at the upcoming alliance summit in Turkey.
In addition, the US President mentioned his telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which took place on July 4, US Independence Day. He described the conversation as “good.” Earlier, Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov said that during the conversation, Trump emphasized the need to “end the Ukrainian conflict as soon as possible.” The head of the White House connected this with the prospects for “mutually beneficial cooperation” between the United States and Russia.
