The Spanish national football team became the world champion for the second time in history. In the final of the FIFA World Cup (2026 World Cup) at the stadium in East Rutherford, America, the team beat Argentina 1:0 after extra time.
The only goal of the match was scored during the second extra period by Ferran Torres from a pass from Nico Williams. The main time of the meeting ended with the score 0:0 and was marked by the removal of Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
The captain of the Argentina national team, Lionel Messi, did not show any effective actions. The 39-year-old footballer also lost the race for the Golden Boot of the tournament to Frenchman Kylian Mbappe, who the day before scored two goals in the bronze medal match with England and brought his statistics to 10 goals. Messi scored eight in the tournament.
Spain similarly won their first World Cup title in 2010 in the final against the Netherlands – the only goal coming from Andres Iniesta in extra time after regulation had ended 0-0.
The world champion title was the first for the star of the Spanish national team, 19-year-old Lamin Yamal. Earlier, RTVI wrote about the history of his photograph with Messi, which was dubbed prophetic on the Internet.
