Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, during his speech at the UN General Assembly in New York, called artificial intelligence (AI) a possible new threat in the Ukrainian conflict. According to Zelensky, AI may begin to make independent decisions in combat operations as early as next year, which is why it is necessary to increase diplomatic efforts.
Zelensky noted in his speech that many countries of the world should be interested in ending the Ukrainian conflict, as it affects the energy and food markets on a global scale, and also leads to a new arms race.
“We need to slow it down before a new phase occurs. Because next year there is a real possibility that artificial intelligence, and not just humans, will begin to decide what will happen on the battlefield. We need to have time to achieve peace before this moment,” said the Ukrainian leader.
He recalled that he discussed peace efforts with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, and also said that he would like to discuss these issues with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is arriving in the US on an official visit.
Zelensky added that he would prefer that “de-escalation steps” be taken in the conflict before winter. He added that Ukraine is preparing for an “extremely difficult” winter season, but is ready “to respond by also making it painful” for Russia if the fighting does not stop.
The President of Ukraine also thanked Kyiv’s military partners and added that his country’s current strategy is aimed at “suppressing Russia’s ability to finance” military operations. According to him, this is the reason for the attacks on the oil infrastructure – Kyiv is thus “burning Russia’s income on its own,” Zelensky said.
“For the first time in the history of Russia, we hear that its pride, the oil industry, is working with all its might. Russian production and Russian finances must be stopped,” Zelensky said from the UN rostrum, linking this with the desire to end the conflict.
