The main event of the year in the world of American television – the 78th Emmy Awards – will be held on Monday, September 14, at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. The ceremony will begin at 8:00 pm ET (5:00 PT). The show will be hosted by “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” star Mariska Hargitay.
Where to watch the Emmys
The main ceremony in the United States will be broadcast live by NBC, while the broadcast will be available on the Peacock streaming platform. You can also watch NBC through services that include the network's local channel, including YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, DirecTV and Sling TV.
Emmy coverage will begin hours before the major awards show. American entertainment network E!, specializing in show business and celebrity news, will launch a pre-show at 5:00 pm ET, and from 6:00 before the ceremony will show live stars' arrival and interviews from the red carpet.
CNN and Variety will broadcast their own coverage of the red carpet. The special CNN & Variety Red Carpet Live: TV's Biggest Night will begin at 5:00 pm ET and will be available to CNN subscribers on CNN.com/Watch, as well as on the network's mobile and smart TV apps. It will be hosted by CNN correspondent Elizabeth Wagmeister, co-chair Variety co-editor Ramin Setoodeh and anchor Melissa Rivers.
NBC will also stream the red carpet for free on its official TikTok account. The hosts will be YouTuber, podcaster and singer Trisha Paytas and fashion critic Nicky Campbell. They will interact with celebrities, discuss guests' outfits and show what is happening behind the scenes.
Who will perform the ceremony
The 78th ceremony will be hosted by Mariska Hargitay, best known for her role as Detective Olivia Benson in the TV series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. The actress received her first Emmy back in 2006 precisely for her performance of this character. Hargitay will become the first woman to host the Emmys alone since Jane Lynch in 2011.
She approaches the ceremony already in the status of a three-time Emmy winner. At the first awards night, she received two statuettes for the documentary My Mom Jayne, dedicated to her mother, Hollywood actress Jayne Mansfield. The film was recognized as the best documentary or non-fiction special project, and Hargitay herself received an award for directing a documentary program.
As RTVI reported, this year the Emmy awards are presented over three evenings – September 5, 6 and 14. The first two ceremonies focused primarily on the technical, documentary, reality and guest acting categories. Among the winners were the team from the Super Bowl halftime show Bad Bunny, who took home seven statuettes, and Sabrina Carpenter for The Muppet Show special, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and the reality series Traitors.
The main winners will be announced on September 14. During the televised ceremony, awards will be presented in 19 categories, including major acting categories and awards for best drama and comedy series.
Main contenders
The HBO Max medical drama Pitt leads the way in terms of the number of nominations, with 25. The series is considered one of the main contenders for the award for best drama. Next come “Tricks” with 24 nominations, “Widows’ Bay” with 19 and “One of Many” with 18.
One of the main intrigues of the evening will be the fight in the comedy categories. The final season of “Cunning” received a series-record 24 nominations, while newcomer “Widow's Cove” has already won eight awards at previous Emmy ceremonies.
In particular, the second season of the Netflix anthology “Gryznya” and the HBO Max project “GKS” are competing for the main awards among mini-series. St. Louis.”
Among the acting intrigues is Jean Smart’s possible next victory for “Tricks.” Matthew Rhys, who previously won an Emmy for his leading role in the drama The Americans, is up for awards this year for two works.
One of the favorites in the Best Actress in a Drama Series category is Rhea Seehorn for Vince Gilligan's One of Many. Among her competitors is Zendaya, who has already won an Emmy twice for her role in Euphoria.
Harrison Ford is up for his first acting Emmy for his role as Dr. Paul Rhodes on “In Therapy.” He is nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
Another notable award has already been awarded posthumously. Rob Reiner won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his appearance in the fourth season of “Bear.” This is the third Emmy Award of his career.
The ceremony will also celebrate the 30th anniversary of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the 50th anniversary of Charlie's Angels. Segments dedicated to them will feature Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz, as well as Kate Jackson, Cheryl Ladd and Jaclyn Smith.
