In Iran, the news about reaching a peace agreement with Washington was met with ambiguity, residents of the Islamic republic interviewed by RTVI.US said. A resident of Bushehr named Said told RTVI.US that he does not consider either side to be a clear winner in the conflict. In his opinion, the results of the confrontation can be assessed as equal – “50 to 50.” At the same time, he noted that Iran is now safe.

Another interlocutor, Ali, a resident of Shiraz, called the situation extremely difficult. He believes the peace process could collapse in the medium term.

“Perhaps something will change in a few months, after the parliamentary elections in the United States. It is possible that everything will start again. The situation is really very difficult. This is the strangest year of my life,” he said.

According to Ali, even in conditions of peace between the United States and Iran, the third party to the conflict – Israel, which is not a party to the agreement – is unlikely to agree to stop hostilities in Lebanon.

“Even if the US doesn’t want to strike later, I think Israel will continue its actions, especially after what happened in Lebanon,” Ali added.

According to him, the prevailing mood of the Iranian population is discontent and disappointment. Some preferred to take a wait-and-see approach and watch further developments. Many Iranians were directly affected by the conflict – some lost loved ones, others themselves suffered as a result of military strikes.

The war and the accompanying blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world’s oil supplies previously passed, led to a significant deterioration in the economic situation in the country. As the interlocutor emphasized, prices for many goods have tripled in just a few months.

“Because of the war, housing prices have doubled. This is due, among other things, to the destruction of part of the infrastructure. Inflation is just crazy. Especially because of the blockade, prices for many goods have tripled,” he said.

Let us recall that on Sunday it became known that the United States and Iran announced that they had reached an agreement providing for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, the cessation of hostilities in the region and the beginning of 60-day negotiations on the future of Tehran’s nuclear program. Representatives of the two countries will meet in Switzerland on June 19 to sign the document. RTVI.US told more about why some in the United States compared the agreement to the capitulation of Washington.
