The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards kicked off with awards in 49 categories on the first of three nights. Seven statuettes went to the team behind the Super Bowl halftime show, including this year's performance by Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny, who also produced the program.
As USA Today notes, following the ceremony, Bad Bunny (real name Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio) found himself halfway to EGOT status. This is what people in world show business call those who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony at least once. Martinez Ocasio has previously won six Grammy Awards.
American pop star Sabrina Carpenter found herself in a similar position, who received her first Emmy for her participation in the special edition of The Muppet Show on the Disney+ streaming service. The singer previously had two Grammy awards.
Other winners from the Saturday night, which mostly featured awards for behind-the-scenes work, included The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, which closed earlier this year, and the reality series The Traitors.
The awards ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles will continue on Sunday evening, with the main ceremony, where the winners in 19 of the most prestigious categories, including acting, will be announced, will take place on September 14.
The new format is being used for the first time this year to cut NBC's main ceremony down to three hours. The first two nights will not be broadcast live; a highlight montage will air on FXX on September 12.
By the way, the host of the main ceremony on September 14, Mariska Hargitay, the daughter of American cinema legend Jayne Mansfield, received two awards on Saturday.
Her film about her mother, My Mom Jayne, won best documentary, and Hargitay also won an Emmy for Outstanding Directing in a Documentary Program.
