Republican New York gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman is ready to greenlight the construction of data centers in the state. He spoke about this in a special interview with RTVI.
The necessary energy is expected to be generated by facilities built by developers.
“I met with developers who are building data centers. They declared their readiness to generate their own energy and send it to the general grid, which will reduce electricity tariffs. When it comes to water—because these facilities consume huge quantities of it—they are willing to implement water recycling systems and pay taxes without shifting the financial burden to local taxpayers,” Blakeman said.
The current governor, Democrat Kathy Hochul, last month signed an order introducing a moratorium on the construction of data centers. Albany said it would reduce the tax burden on New Yorkers by not having to pay for the construction of power lines and infrastructure. Blakeman, in turn, criticized Hochul for supporting green energy and banning natural gas production in New York.
“Did you know that New York State has some of the largest natural gas reserves in the world? And Kathy Hochul won't let us mine it. Kathy Hochul is not allowing New Yorkers to benefit from this, which would lower utility costs, create jobs, and ensure prosperity for New York State. She buys this gas in Pennsylvania,” said RTVI’s interlocutor.
