The youngest mayor in the history of Stockbridge, Georgia, 22-year-old Jayden Williams, has been suspended from his duties and stripped of his privileges in connection with an investigation into his alleged spending, Atlanta News First reports (ANF). This happened six months after he took the oath.

The Stockbridge City Council passed a resolution placing temporary administrative measures against Williams pending an independent investigation due to his possible misappropriation of city funds. His access to fuel and city cards for making purchases was blocked, his use of city-owned vehicles was restricted, and he was required to return city property.

The independent investigation was launched after certain information was received by the offices of the City Manager, Finance Department and City Attorney. The prosecutor's office indicated that the charges are preliminary. The authorities have not yet clarified what exactly the young mayor could have illegally spent the city’s funds on.

They also stressed that the restrictions are administrative, not disciplinary, and do not indicate misconduct or misconduct until the end of the investigation. According to them, these measures are designed to “protect the work of city services” and “ensure the objectivity of the investigation during its conduct.”

Williams himself has stated the importance of maintaining “the principles of honesty, openness and transparency” in Stockbridge. The official stressed that he “welcomes a comprehensive and independent investigation and hopes that he will have the opportunity to respond to any allegations through due process.”

“Mayor Williams remains committed to serving the residents of Stockbridge and upholding the integrity, transparency and legitimacy of city government,” he said in a statement.

Acting Mayor Elton Alexander told ANF that officials need to know how much money was spent, what it was spent on and whether it was authorized. The investigation should last 30-45 days, and this will not affect the work of city services, he explained.

“The mayor still has all of his constitutional rights here in the city, he simply cannot appear in places that are not open to the public, he will still be able to preside over and attend city council meetings as provided by the city charter,” Alexander added.
