The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Saturday, July 18, the death of two US military personnel as a result of an Iranian strike on Jordanian territory. Another American soldier remains missing in action after the attack.
Iran's air attack on Jordanian territory took place as part of a new round of conflict with the United States, which began in July. Earlier, the United States resumed strikes on Iranian territory, citing attacks by Iranian armed forces on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
US President Donald Trump said that the truce in the conflict was over, and on Saturday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi noted that the country was suspending compliance with the memorandum of understanding, which the parties signed on June 17.
CENTCOM did not disclose the identities of the dead and missing persons until the families were notified. Four more soldiers were taken to hospitals for examination, but have already been discharged. As noted in a post on the social network X (formerly Twitter), US forces, together with local partners, “defended against an Iranian ballistic missile and drone strike” on July 17, but did not name its specific location.
We may be talking about a night attack on the Jordanian Muwaffaq Salti Air Force base, which Tehran announced, notes The Washington Post (WP). The base is considered one of the key ones for the United States in the Middle East and is located in the city of Azraq near the Jordanian capital Amman.
The number of US losses in the conflict with Iran, taking into account new data, has thus reached 16. Most of the losses occurred in the first weeks of hostilities, which began at the end of February.
Seven servicemen were killed in March during Iranian strikes on US forces in the region, and six more soon crashed on a KC-135 refueling aircraft over Iraqi territory. In July, casualties included the death of a helicopter pilot who crashed over the Arabian Sea.
As CNN notes, the Iranian Ministry of Health announced the death of 50 people in the country as a result of the latest US strikes, which have continued for seven days in a row.
