“Russia’s first salvo”: the US raised the alarm over election fakes with celebrities

Fake videos have appeared on English-language social networks in which a number of American celebrities, including Julia Roberts and Sarah Jessica Parker, are calling for people to refuse to vote in the November elections for the Democratic Party, which is usually supported by Hollywood. According to the MS Now TV channel, citing analysts, the campaign to create and distribute deepfakes may be associated with Russia.

The videos that the channel drew attention to are based on real video messages from stars – both public and ordered through the Cameo service. The audio tracks in them are replaced by artificial intelligence (AI) with messages about disappointment with Democrats and campaigning for Republicans ahead of the midterm elections on November 3.

Thus, the star of the film “Pretty Woman” Roberts, in a deepfake, instead of words in support of gender equality uttered in the original 2023, criticizes Democrats and pharmaceutical companies that allegedly promote transgender transitions.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress Emma Caulfield compares the opposition to ghouls who “drink the blood of children,” and the topic of the address of the fake Christopher Lloyd (“Back to the Future”) was criticism of the Black Lives Matter movement.

The voice of Sarah Jessica Parker (“Sex and the City”) in a fake video states that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky called her to Kyiv, but she refused the visit because he is “a Nazi and a murderer of his people.” The neural network voice of Parker calls actors and democratic politicians who support Zelensky “corrupt Nazi prostitutes” who should not be allowed to power.

The videos are accompanied by the CNN logo and contain a call to distribute content under the hashtag #AllDemocratsAreCriminals (“All Democrats are criminals”).

MS Now and experts interviewed by the channel claim that the action may be part of a “Kremlin-backed” operation called “Matryoshka”, the purpose of which, in their opinion, is to change election sentiment in foreign countries.

“This is Russia's first salvo in its attack on the US midterm elections. Over the past year they have traveled through Moldova, Armenia, Romania, France, Sweden, Germany and other countries. Now it’s our turn,” said Darren Linville, a professor at Clemson University in South Carolina.

MS Now admits that none of the fake videos have gone viral yet. RTVI was able to find publications in X promoting these videos (in particular with Roberts and Parker), which collected 45 – 60 thousand views. However, it is unclear how many views these videos had before media reports about fakes.

As part of the disinformation campaign in the United States, in addition to messages from stars, fake CNN reports are also being distributed, MS Now reports. The videos cast a negative light on certain Democratic candidates for the U.S. Senate, including James Talarico in Texas and Jon Ossoff in Georgia.

According to the channel, the Bluesky social network blocked seven accounts and deleted fake videos, citing a ban on coordinated inauthentic activity. At the same time, Elon Musk’s Platform X has not yet taken action, the channel adds.

The topic of the alleged operation “Matryoshka” was previously commented on by the Russian Foreign Ministry in connection with similar accusations against the backdrop of the elections in Armenia. Then the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, called the theses about Moscow’s intervention “a hoax.” She called for stopping “inventing fake news about the “hand of the Kremlin” and said that the videos that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan posts on his social networks “no Matryoshka operation could have come up with.”
